Garden Cocoon Pea Free Personal Use Knit Pattern

Posted by Carey Nuss on

There’s nothing so endearing as tiny babies folded into tiny positions.  This adorable pea pod style snuggle sack will keep your little one all cozily wrapped up in those first few weeks.  Forget the swaddle and slip baby into this cute newborn cocoon.  It’s also perfect as a newborn photo prop.

This cocoon comes in one size suitable for an average size Newborn under 2 weeks of age. It is designed for a very snug fit around the baby, and although it does have lots of stretch, it will not fit babies over 9 lbs.

This pattern calls for Size 10.0mm (US 15) Double Pointed Needles (or use the Magic Loop Method) and Straight Needles used with Super Bulky (6) yarn.

Materials used in the pattern are:

  • Yarn: Approximately 85 yards of Super Bulky (6) yarn
  • Knitting Needles: Size 10.0mm (US 15) Straight and Double Pointed Needles (or use the Magic Loop Method)
  • Yarn or Tapestry Needle

I have a copy of the pattern hear for my personal work so I can access it but you to are able to get a copy by reading her blog and accessing her website. Melody has some wonderful free patterns and paid patterns for babies & children which I often use her as my go to as I know her patterns will work with australian wool. I will place a link to her ravelry page at the end of this blog.

Pattern Gauge 5 sts and 7 rows = 2 inches (5 centimeters) In Stockinette Stitch and ***It is important to check your gauge!*** Dont twist your sts.

Abbreviations

  • K: Knit
  • K2tog: Knit the next two stitches together
  • **: Repeat the section in between the two stars as specified

**Note: This design is meant to be super snug around a Newborn baby and is meant to fit a 6-8 lb. baby.  Your project will look very small until it is stretched out around the Newborn.  Be sure to cast on your stitches loosely so the opening of the cocoon can be stretched to slide a Newborn in.**

Loosely Cast on 30 sts onto Double Pointed Needles (or use the Magic Loop Method) My favourite for circular work. Join in the round and place stitch marker

Round 1: *K1, P1* Repeat around

Repeat round 1 until your piece measures approx. 10.75” (27cm) from the cast on edge

Decreases:

Round 1: *K2tog, P1* Repeat around (20 total sts)

Round 2: *K2tog* Repeat around (10 total sts)

Do not bind off.  Cut approx. 12” (30.5cm) tail.  Using yarn needle, remove all sts from DPNs or magic loop, as if to purl.  Pull yarn tail through to cinch the bottom of cocoon.  Tie a knot and weave in ends.

Using your straight needles and starting on a knit stitch, pick up 25 sts from the top of the cocoon.  Make sure to pick these sts up from the outside of the cocoon towards the inside so your seam will not show as much.

Row 1: (Right side facing) *K1, P1* Repeat all the way across, ending on a K1

Row 2: *P1, K1* Repeat all the way across, ending on a P1

Repeat rows 1 & 2 until your hood measures approx. 6” (15.25cm) from the picked up sts

Separate your sts onto your two straight needles (12 on one and 13 on the other) and use one of your Double Pointed Needles to bind off using the Three Needle Bind off Method.  Make sure your two right sides are together before binding off so your seam will be on the inside.  Secure and weave in all ends.
